Mountaineering Women: Stories by Early Climbers by David Mazel, Women have known the challenges alps highest leone lepontine and triumphs of mountaineering for nearly two centuries, alps highest leone lepontine and for nearly as long they have been writing about their accomplishments, creating a fascinating, often thrilling literature of adventure alps highest leone lepontine and daring. As with other aspects of women's history, however, the literature of mountaineering women has been scattered alps highest leone lepontine and largely forgotten. Sixteen of their stories - sometimes published under the name of a male relative, sometimes under anonymous bylines such as "a Lady" - are here recovered alps highest leone lepontine and collected for the first time. The women who speak to us in this book climbed on the world's highest peaks alps highest leone lepontine and most difficult rock faces, from the English Lake District to the Alps to the Andes alps highest leone lepontine and Himalaya. Some were politically motivated, like the American Annie Smith Peck, who considered her spectacular ascents a strategy for advancing the liberation of her sex. Others were staunchly conservative about all matters save their personal right to climb mountains, a right that could rarely be taken for granted alps highest leone lepontine and sometimes proved as difficult to win as the summit itself. These stories are as much about people as about mountains. They tell of conflict alps highest leone lepontine and cooperation, of women struggling not only to reach a summit but also to negotiate their freedom in a society that preferred they simply stay at home. The editor's introduction provides an overview of the two hundred-year history of women's climbing alps highest leone lepontine and places it in the context of that struggle. Mountaineering Women shows how highly skilled, courageous, alps highest leone lepontine and determined women have revised alps highest leone lepontine and transformed a traditionally masculine activity, while at the same time transforming themselves - each arriving, as Mary Crawfordput it, "at last upon the summit to gaze out upon a new world. Surely not the same old earth she has seen all her life? Yes - but looked at from on top - a point of view which now makes upon her mind its indelible impression".

"Red" Davidson Professor of History, Angelo State UniversityLa familia de Leon was one of the foundation stones on which Texas was built. Martin de Leon alps highest leone lepontine and his wife Patricia de la Garza left a comfortable life in Mexico for the hardships alps highest leone lepontine and uncertainties of the Texas frontier in 1801. Together, they established family ranches in South Texas and, in 1824, the town of Victoria alps highest leone lepontine and the de Leon colony on the Guadalupe River (along with Stephen F. Austin's colony, the only completely successful colonization effort in Texas). They alps highest leone lepontine and their descendents survived alps highest leone lepontine and prospered under four governments, as the society in which they lived evolved from autocratic to republican alps highest leone lepontine and the economy from which they drew their livelihood changed from one of mercantile control to one characterized by capitalistic investments. Combining the storytelling flair of a novelist with a scholar's concern for the facts, Ana Carolina Castillo Crimm here recounts the history of three generations of the de Leon family. She follows Martin alps highest leone lepontine and Patricia from their beginnings in Mexico through the establishment of the family ranches in Texas alps highest leone lepontine and the founding of the de Leon colony alps highest leone lepontine and the town of Victoria. Then she details how, after Martin's death in 1834, Patricia alps highest leone lepontine and her children endured the Texas Revolution, exile in New Orleans alps highest leone lepontine and Mexico, expropriation of their lands, and, after returning to Texas, years of legal battles to regain their property. They extend from the Bernina Range in Graubünden in the west as far as to the lower promontories east of the Mura such as the Hochwechsel in Styria in the east.
Australian Alps - The Australian Alps is a general term for the highest mountain ranges in south-eastern Australia.
Main chain of the Alps - ... case of every mountain system, geographers are disposed to regard, as a general rule, the watershed (or boundary dividing the waters flowing towards opposite slopes of the range) as marking the main chain, and this usage is justified in that the highest peaks often rise on or very near the watershed.
